Obsessing Over Black

July 5, 2016

My thoughts this week are on using black within our spaces. The word ‘black’ often conjures up negative images of darkness, mourning, as well as authority and status. So it is no wonder that when contemplating a design scheme, black is not going to be an obvious choice, especially with colour trends being introduced year in, year out. That said, black is timeless and presents itself wonderfully in our interiors.

It may surprise you how versatile black can be. It is like an elixir that keeps your spaces eternally in vogue and modern.

Still unsure? Let me take you on a little journey of how wonderful black can be.

Black adds depth and style to this industrial styled space, which, whilst it doesn’t overpower the dining area, it certainly adds definition. Without the black elements such as the seating, accessories and lamp fitments, it would visually look washed out.  In this instance, black works wonderfully together with the natural wood and greenery of the plants, which soften the look to create a more welcoming, relaxed feel to the space. If you’re a little apprehensive about going the whole nine yards when choosing black, then this could be a good place to start.

Utilising black with metallic elements such as gold, ensures a luxurious styled interior that exudes elegance and timeless qualities.

Black painted walls create the perfect backdrop for artwork to shine out from.

This space oozes drama and atmosphere, as well as energy, which is transmitted through the use of small pops of colour. I adore the fact that the smallest amount of colour, in a predominately black space,  makes it sing louder than it would do in a more colourful setting and therefore has more impact. Less is more in this case!

Contrasting elements such as on trend, brass or copper, compliment and elevate black out of the moody darkness that it is visually perceived, to a stylish, timeless elegance.

So maybe next time your redesigning a space, maybe give black a try, you may be pleasantly surprised.

Loved this Maria. I love black (i’m passionate about black and white) and have recently re-painted my living room white again and had been contemplating doing the breast wall in black for the reasons that you’ve mentioned in your blog. It has such an impact doesn’t it?
