Mid Century Love – Series 7™, Chair Design

Mid Century Love – Series 7™,  Chair Design

Can you believe it’s Friday already?! This week has gone super fast and the summer holidays are fast approaching until my youngest breaks up.  I don’t know whether to laugh or cry, so for now, I am going to concentrate on a little bit of furniture design to block out those feelings of disbelief and panic that are setting in!

I have a bit of a thing for Mid-Century furniture design, which I fell in love with during my time studying for my degree. Furniture from this era has clean, simple lines that just fit in with our homes and workplaces today, and you’ll see them just about everywhere. To be honest, before I started my studies, I didn’t have a clue about furniture design. A chair was just a chair. I either liked it or I didn’t, simple. But I was so wrong! There are so many beautiful designs out there and I am in constant awe.

So today, I am picking one of my favourite chair designs by Arne Jacobsen. It is one of the most simplistic chair designs out there and you will no doubt have probably sat on one, perhaps, without even knowing that it is one of the most iconic chair designs; the Series 7™chair. Last year saw this chair celebrating 60 years since its creation and, Fritz Hansen has commissioned nine new colours, which have been designed by the artist Tal R.  I’m in love with its new look.

The properties which have made this chair so successful are mainly due to its attributes of its stackability, durability and its weightlessness, which makes it great as an everyday chair.  Arne Jacobsen designed the Series 7™ as the successor of “The Ant” Chair which was originally designed for Novo, a Danish company, for use in their canteen.
Made from a single piece of plywood, which has been deformed by steam to create the seat of the chair,
the Series 7™’s simplistic, curvy, feminine design, is easy on the eye and you will find this chair just about everywhere. Even my dentist has them in a number of colours in their waiting room. It’s no surprise that it is the most sold stackable chair in design history. It has sold over 7 Million since its creation!!

Last year, I was swooning over the limited edition, oh so pretty, pale pink with 24-carat gold-plated legs creation. It just oozes elegance and femininity with a sophisticated look. Sadly, it appears to have sold out in this country.

The Series 7™ chair also comes in a children’s size, bar stool and, as you can see from one of my office designs above, a swivel chair.

There are nine new colours for the Series 7™ chair, which have given it a new lease of life, which has seen the base and the seat shell given the “same” colour creating a monochrome look, which is different from the traditional chrome frame edition and I like the new warm, homelier look that they have created.

So there you have it, just ‘one’ of my many favourite iconic Mid-Century Chair designs. Maybe you have a favourite chair design or, maybe you’ve spotted one of these chairs on your travels…… you may even be sitting on one now! It would be lovely to hear from you.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Maria

Most of my acquaintances think that I would love the mid-century design style, but I don’t!!! That said, I do like some pieces, the Jacobsen inspired Swan chair being one of my favourites, especially in purple!! I must admit, I did use some mid-century pieces to get round inserting contemporary design (aahhhhh!!!!!) into a historic building…and it worked well. I love the chairs above. Great piece :) x

Thanks Amanda :D I think as designers, we might not always like a particular style, but we can appreciate different designs within. I love mid-century, but then again, I love other styles too….I am a bit of a magpie when it comes down to the design elements within each style ;) Thanks again for taking the time to comment when I know you are so busy!! Good luck with the MA!!
