The Natural Handwoven Trend

I’m sure you’d agree with me that there’s something quite beautiful about natural woven pieces that have been handmade by skilled and experienced craftsmen.  Their organic textural qualities bring our homes alive with their woven forms, offering interest and tactile surfaces that touch our senses as well as their ability to offer the decorative. The fact that they are often environmentally friendly both in design and choice of materials means that by opting for natural designs, you’re be avoiding the likes of plastics and other man-made fibres into your homes making for a cleaner, healthier living of which we are becoming more aware of.

Embracing the handwoven trend in my kitchen with Belly Baskets from Next and Clasohlson

With our incessant need to improve and create our perfect sanctuary, opting for natural at least goes some way to helping with environmental issues within our homes as well as the wider world in general. There’s also the ethical side as we keep skills alive worldwide that benefits communities and the people who make them.

With these thoughts in mind, I’ve put my sourcing hat on for you and found these fabulous handwoven beauties to adorn your homes with.

Bohemia Halfah Cactus – Bohemia Design

What can I say but the plant lover in me just literally jumped with joy or should I say, my inner child, as I shouted I WANT, I NEED! when I came across these Grass Cacti from Bohemia Design. I seriously cannot stop looking at them and thinking about how they’d look right at home in my jungalow/botanical styled kitchen.  They’re also perfect for the serial plant killers amongst you, not that you’d need an excuse, I know I don’t. Ethically handmade in Morocco using halfah grass (also known as esparto), which is a natural plant fibre. They’d certainly add a fun decorative element to your homes as well as being a unique focal point. Available in four sizes so you can have your very own cacti gang or use individually.

Wall Hangings

The Natural Handwoven Trend

Macrame Wall Hanging – Sparrow  – Lilly Razz

I’m seriously fascinated by macrame which kind of surprises me having grown up in the 70’s when my mum had macrame plant holders hanging everywhere. Although it’s no wonder when you look at the skill involved and the amazing choice on offer. Of course, the range of materials varies from maker to maker with this one being made with 100% recycled yarn from Lily Razz. They’re definitely an eco-friendly way to decorate your walls whilst adding texture and detail to your homes.

Wall Decor or Bowl

Handwoven Bowl – Artisanne

Handwoven Bowl – Artisanne

Some woven forms such as these handmade bowls, you have to admire for their artistic qualities as well as their ability to hold your fruit. The decision is whether you hang or put them to use. Or why not both, using the vertical to store where they become wall art and readily accessible for when you need them.

I’d like to mention that Artisanne is an ethical company who works directly – (without middlemen) – with the artisans who are based in a village near Thiès in Senegal. Direct access and communication with the artisans allows them to design their own styles and guarantee the top-end quality that Artisanne is renowned for. These handwoven bowls are weaved from a local ndiorokh grass intertwined with long strips of plastic. It has a wipe clean surface. Its unique handcrafted nature means that no two bowls are exactly the same.

One can never have enough baskets in the home. They make one of the most useful and attractive storage solutions. From hiding the multitude of plastic your little ones acquire in their early years to laundry and storing toiletries or towels. It appears there’s a basket for every need and they come in a multitude of sizes and forms. The hardest part is deciding which one and for where!

Boho Quirky Lampshade Yellow Gabriela 2 – The Knotted Touch

Of course, handwoven doesn’t have to be rattan or wicker, macrame has and still is, a massive trend that continues to fascinate and grow. This simply stunning yellow & white lampshade is made using braided and twisted cotton yarn and is adorned with naturally treated wooden beads to add a quirky/boho pattern to this lampshade. It’s also handmade in my home county Surrey, UK. It’s also an absolute steal at £69 and personally I’m in love with it.

TIP: Natural woven elements are perfect for darker style interiors as they add textural contrast and interest.

PENDANT LIGHT, WICKER BALL MEDIUM, NATURAL, Ø60CM, H50CM – HK LIVING – Nedgis

There’s a beautiful play on light and shadow with pendants like this rattan one from HK Living when you turn the light on. Light is diffused and seeps through the intricate weave, offering a warm and cozy feel to a room which I love. They’re also stunning to look at with their decorative weave.

Of course, wicker pieces such as this handmade wicker shade lamp embodies the Scandinavian style with its Nordic good looks, but would also work with the new modern rustic style that’s been emerging the last few years.

Versatile Furniture

The Natural Handwoven Trend

Lene Bjerre Clara Couch – Sweetpea & Willow

Rattan is one of the most durable and environmentally plants that can be used for making furniture. Traced as far back as 2500 B.C., it’s never really gone out of fashion and works well indoors or outside. This versatile piece the gorgeous Clara Counch would look at home at the end of a bed or in a bay window or why not the garden for barmier sunnier days. Wherever you decide to put it, it would be perfect for taking five with a cuppa in style.

Mogg Donut stools by Alessandra Baldereschi – Go Modern

If you read last week’s post on The Versatile Stool, you’ll know just how great stools are. This particular one uses the ancient art of rush weaving to cover the seat. It’s incredibly hard-wearing and eminently practical material, giving the traditional design a 21st-century twist. In contrast to the seat the Donut’s tripod metal base is lacquered white or grey, or in a stunning copper which looks incredible against the straw colour of the reed fibres, intricately woven into the padded seat base. A good-looking stool if ever there was and one that embraces traditional craftmanship.

Outdoors/Indoors

Lastly, one for your newborns with this Bohemian style macrame bassinet which is perfect for the nursery or living room, and will surely lull your baby into a blissful slumber. It’s handwoven by female artisans in South America, a craft that has been passed down over generations. (Fairtrade)

My grandparents both had esparto shoes. I bet they’ll be trendy in no time. I’m currently looking for garden furniture so this post is very handy.
