Welcome to a new interiors page that I’m now hosting alongside some fabulous interior accounts that make up @eclectically_made over on Instagram. November’s winner is the lovely Sarah aka @nudeinthenovice. If there’s one thing that you’ll hopefully take away with you today it’s experimenting with pattern and colour in your homes. It’s something that I’ve started to try out in our newly decorated garden room. It might take a leap of faith to give it a go but it’s so worth it. It’s all about seeing where you land and that’s the fun part.

Sarah also has an expert eye for not only pattern play but also being able to add character and personality through her design choices. Her home is filled to the brim with inspiration on so many levels and is definitely worth spending time to take it all in. Ready to seek the artful play of pattern and eclectic decor that is Sarah’s home? Step right on in…

About Sarah…

Sarah lives in Middlesbrough in the North East of England with her family and three dogs. A social worker in an adult social care centre during the day, Sarah spends the rest of her spare time habitually decorating her home.

Location…

Sarah bought her house back in 2016 and although they haven’t done anything structural, she has decorated and changed every room. Her biggest challenge was the existing bathroom where they changed it into a shower room. It may not be her and her family’s forever home but Sarah has created a stunning home that packs a punch wherever you look.

Sarah’s Style…

Bold and eclectic, Sarah is not shy of experimenting with colour and clashing prints and patterns. There’s a wonderful sense of freedom when you break the rules and Sarah’s home is a great example of this. Every room embraces these design elements to the max and they work beautifully together. It’s about being true to yourself and personalising your home to you and those that live there.

I would say my style is bold and eclectic, I love using colour and clashing prints and patterns and avoid anything too neutral.

Eclectic Quirky Decor

I personally love the quirky decorative pieces Sarah has sourced. They add a unique and personal fun touch that our homes should not be without. After all, life is for living and enjoying it as much as possible. Dressing your home shouldn’t be taken too seriously especially as they’re our sanctuary away from the serious stuff like work and every day (sometimes mundane) commitments. Oh, and they’re great conversational pieces too when you have guests around.

Choosing individualistic pieces that have meaning will allow you to connect with them. Sarah has achieved this in her home. Personalising every space with one-off design bold pieces that provide an insight into her and her family. Don’t think you have to go overboard either (unless you want to that is.) Adding one or two standout pieces within a space can make a real impact and is a great way to start out if you’re not overly confident when it comes to styling your home.

However, if you going to go for it and maximise your decor as Sarah has, allow space between each decorative choice so your eye can rest before taking in the next visual treat. Sarah is great at allowing negative (blank) space between her styled standout pieces. It really does allow you to appreciate every detail.

I do try to curb my maximalist tendencies, but I just love things too much. I do try to include some more quirky stand out items and would recommend displaying your ornaments in groupings.

The Fifth Wall

I wrote ages ago about the fifth wall that is the ceiling. It’s often overlooked but when done well can create a visual treat when you step into a room. Sarah has been bold enough to include it in her bedroom space under the window alcove. By papering this part of the ceiling, Sarah has provided continuity to the room’s decor. Drawing the eye towards the window seating area.

Sarah’s Styling Tips & Advice

As a fellow lover of bold wallpaper, I can completely relate to Sarah using this as the foundation to set a room’s design scheme. Colour is also an important factor. Combine the two and you’re onto a winner. The rest of the decor will evolve around these important elements.

Iā€™m very spontaneous and donā€™t really plan a scheme, I usually spot something, fall madly in love with it and build my scheme around it, whatever it may be.

Gallery Wall Goals With A Difference!

I always give myself plenty of time, putting a few pieces up and then leaving it for a while before adding to it, to assess what looks best where.  – Sarah @nudeandthenovice

Sarah’s gallery wall is one to be admired for its artistic display for sure. Her advice is to try and make sure the artwork for your gallery wall has the same kind of vibe.

Mixing it up with different sized pieces as well as different shapes allows you to create a gallery wall that’s different to the norm. I have to say I 100% agree with her!

Trust Your Instinct When Decorating!

I love the thrown-together look, mixing old with new, being bold without scheme becoming too contrived.  – Sarah – @nudeandthenovice

Sarah admits to having made a lot of design mistakes. Her mantra, if you like, is “If you don’t love something instantly, then you never will!” Basically, trust your gut instinct. Sarah hasn’t always listened to her’s and has at times been swayed by opinions of others. As a consequence, she’s had to redecorate. It’s not uncommon to fall into this trap. I’ve been there myself. Although, I’m as stubborn as hell and tend to always do the opposite to what I’ve been advised.

I say be more like Sarah and go with what you love and trust your instincts. After all, it’s your home and your the one that has to live with the design choices that you carry out. If you don’t like them, you can always change things. Nothing is ever set in stone. With time, you’ll get to know what will work for you and what won’t. It really is that simple.

Be True To Yourself!

It’s not uncommon to try and categorise someone’s decor choices. Trying to achieve a certain look whether it be boho, eclectic or maximalist can mean you might not necessarily end up with a home you’ll love. Sarah has the right idea when it comes to choosing a style and that’s perfecting her own. It’s personal and unique to her alone. She admits to getting things wrong a lot of the time but for her, the secret to a fabulous interior style is to not to try too hard!
