How to Make Your Spaces Your Own by Staying True to Yourself

Today, it’s all about staying true to yourself as the new trends start filtering their way through from the powers that be, who somehow possess the knowledge to know exactly what we need in our homes and lives, or do they?

For me, as a designer and lover of all things interior, I look to these trends for inspiration, and that my friend is all they should be.  They are NOT set in stone and they never should be. You will read about these trends over the coming months on other blogs and in the media explaining to you about what you should, and shouldn’t have in your spaces. From colour schemes, and patterns to the latest everything interior, the trends for 2017, will be thrown at you from every direction, and it saddens me somewhat that we are dictated to so much.

Don’t get me wrong, trends are great for inspiration, but we should all remember to remain true to ourselves and incorporate our individualism in our homes.  Actually, I have never been good at being told what to do. And, as my mother used to say, and still does, that is because I am just plain stubborn!

It’s actually not a bad thing, this stubbornness. It gives me the freedom to choose what I like and if it happens to be on trend then all the better. Trends don’t make me who I am, or my home what it is. Sadly, I have seen so many interiors that mirror image and emulate each other, especially on social media.  It’s a shame that some of us appear to have lost our own identity in homes. We of course will take inspiration from other people’s interiors, but it doesn’t mean we have to recreate the whole caboodle!

What I am trying to say is be true to yourself in all aspects of your life and even more so with your home. Its your personal space, and it should represent you in every way. The most coveted and interesting homes are usually ones that are individualistic and ooze their owners personality.

Rest assured, it is okay to be you and not be a trend follower. Being different is refreshingly beautiful and inspiring in itself right?!

Here are some of my tips to keeping your spaces perfectly you:-

  • If you’re looking for inspiration, look no further than yourself. Write down your own ‘client brief’. Look at how you use your spaces. What colours make you happy, relaxed, calm or energize you.
  • What style/styles do you like. It’s perfectly ok to like more than one. I am a complete magpie, as I love, and appreciate different styles from all eras. And yes it’s ok to mix, if that’s what makes you happy. Anything goes in my books. After all its your home and should represent you.
  • Ask yourself what do you want from your homes/spaces. For example, are you needing your home to become your own personal retreat after the hustle and bustle of working in a busy city. Or are you a bit a of a party animal and love to entertain?
  • Incorporate your hobbies or interests. If, like me you love plants and flowers, include them in your spaces. These are the things that make up your identity.
  • You don’t have to shop on the high street, who, by the way, will be pushing all those new trends at you from every direction. Seek out unusual places to source unusual finds for your homes, such as antique shops, reclamation yards, car-boots, even your local charity shops may have some hidden treasure or two. There is something ever so exciting and wonderful in owning something that has a little bit of history to it. Magical even!!
  • Another go to for individuality is to find a local artist or craftsman who offer one-off/limited edition pieces. Something handmade is truly beautiful and personal and if it means something to you, even better.
  • Go bespoke if you can as you can have things made/built to your liking. Even if it’s a cushion made from material you have sourced whether it be old or new. You will be able to say it’s truly yours and yours alone.

On a final note, creating a home based on you, and your individuality, ensures that you create a home with timeless qualities, and whats not to love about that!!

That’s all from me this week, but remember as William Shakespeare once wrote…..

Trend forecasting…NO!!!!!!!!! NO!!!!!!!!! :D It’s not really my thing :) That said, you are so right, design choices should not be set in stone. I always go with an individual approach and apply a design that will suit the space. Goodness knows how I always get away with imposing my eclectic style on people :) A fabulous post that definitely needed to be covered Maria :) xx
