One of the noticeable things about January, and I’m not talking about the grey and cold weather here, is that we are pretty much skint strapped for cash after the indulgences, and present buying of December. With some of us planning to redesign our homes this coming year, I thought I’d offer some money-saving inspiration, by the way of a Splurge vs Save series.
As a designer, there will always be a client budget to stick to regardless of the size of a design scheme. It’s really no different when redesigning your own homes. Sticking to a budget is paramount to being able to finish your dream spaces. There is nothing worse than an unfinished project!
Splurge Vs Save – #Side Tables
First up on Splurge vs Save, is the humble, but very important side table. Also referred to as an end table, occasional or lamp table. Whatever name you prefer, your living rooms really shouldn’t be without them.
Side tables add an additional layer to your room whilst being practical at the same time.
TIP: Flexibility is key when trying to stick to a budget. After you have established the style of your chosen space, spend time researching the products you need. More often than not, you can achieve the same look, but at a reduced cost. You never know, you may even come in under budget, and be able to splurge on the one item that you really have to have. In may case, that’ll be the Eames Lounge chair!
Even the smallest of side tables can have an impact. Here the placement of the side table anchors the gorgeous red mid-century chair. It also prevents the chair from looking like its floating in the middle of this living space, and connects it to the other seating.
Side tables not only provide the means for somewhere for your guests to put their cups or glasses, but they also add a decorative layer to your room for which you can create vignettes. Layering your spaces adds interest and detail.
Vignettes are great for telling a story about you and your home. All you need are a small group of several objects that form a picture. Or, in my case, a coffee cup or two, and this months Elle Decoration, which just about sums me up.
Round side tables also help break up lines in a room, providing more interest.
