Bedroom Redesign Surprise Update & Moodboard Inspiration!

http://theinterioreditor.com/interior-inspiration/bedrooms/decadent-elegant-art-deco-inspired-bedroom-makeover-the-reveal/I am super excited to announce that we’ve finally made some progress on our bedroom redesign. And if you happened to read my The Ultimate Guide To Choosing The Perfect Bed post it’s not quite what you think it’s going to be either!

There’s a reason behind the changes at The I.E. household and it all came about from my visit to London Design Fair last week. I happened to meet up again with one of my all-time favourite family-run wallpaper design brands Woodchip & Magnolia! I’ve featured their amazing wallpaper quite a bit since I started writing this blog and they’ve proved to be extremely popular amongst you.

I absolutely love London Design Week meeting up with designers/makers and seeing their work in the flesh. I only managed to do two days which was both exhilarating and exhausting at the same time! I’ve loads to share with you with future posts so keep your eyes peeled for some wonderful designs and the makers behind them.

You’re probably wondering what this has got to do with the bedroom right? You’ll need to bear with me as there’s a little story behind our current ecstatic state of bedroom overhaul and it does include my trip to London.

When something makes your heart skip a beat and you can’t stop thinking about it, you know you have to do something about it! That’s exactly how Woodchip & Magnolias new Pearl Lowe Va Va Frome Leaf wallpaper had captured me.

Of course, it appeals to my love of nature and there is the green amongst the pink which I find so soothing. As soon as I got home I showed the hubs.  I have to say I was a bit apprehensive as we’d decided on rich moody blue decor for our bedroom for the past year. Surprisingly, he was instantly drawn to the design as I was. I think the house being full of plants and our botanical kitchen wall may have had a brainwashing effect on him which of course I’m happy about ;)

You can see why from the remnants of the wallpaper why we need to redecorate our bedroom.

Seeing this wallpaper has literally meant that he’s already started stripping the walls and preparing our bedroom for redecoration. A sheer miracle as it’s over a year since we discussed revamping our room.

The Wallpaper

Va Va Frome Leaf

“Botanicals are so popular in interiors, and this one is so pretty and fresh. It’s another take on the lushness of palm and fern leaves, but like our bird floral, the leaf is imaginary and has a timeless, vintage quality to it, which I adore. I’d love to see this design in my own bathroom or hallway – or both! I literally cannot wait to put them up!” Pearl Lowe for Woodchip & Magnolia

What is also appealing with this wallpaper is the sizing of the delicate leaf pattern. On balance, its design is such that it would work incredibly well in any sized room. If you recall my Guide to Using Pattern, larger patterns ultimately work well in larger rooms so you can visually appreciate their design and smaller patterns in smaller rooms so they don’t get lost.

Our bedroom isn’t the largest room you’ll come across and, with this in mind, and taking into account that wardrobes will take up one of the walls, I decided that the Va Va Frome leaf wallpaper would act as a backdrop and focal point to the room. i.e., the bed. In other words, a stunning feature wall.

The Bed

A bit of bed shopping at the weekend also seemed to seal the deal as Heal’s had the perfect bed that would compliment this fab new Frome wallpaper. We may have made a mess of the bed in the process of checking it out!

Feeling enthused, we set off for a bit of bed shopping at the weekend. Or should I say bed shop as we fell in love instantly with the Wallis bed on display at Heal’s. The incredibly helpful Tyra-Jade must have thought I was a bit bonkers as all I kept repeating was how the bed would be a perfect match for the Va Va Frome Leaf wallpaper!

The soft jade colour was perfect and the curved lines of the bed frame also reflected the delicacy of the leaves on the wallpaper.

There are three different types of leg finishes to the Wallis bed as well as 40 fabric options!

I would add that although we had both made our mind up there and then, I did manage to get the hubs to have a look at a few other shops. This was as much out of principle because if you don’t look you’ll never have anything to compare with what you’ve found.

A quick furniture placement drawing of our bedroom to ensure the bed fitted and we had ample storage.

I would like to add that as soon as we got home, I did draw up a quick floor plan to ensure that the bed would fit! It’s essential that you do this because beds in shops can look remarkably deceiving in size as they tend to be in open plan shop floors which makes it hard to judge. It also allowed us to see the depth of the wardrobe that we would be restricted to too. Taking my own advice in my how to choose the perfect bed, the Wallis bed is large enough for us to feel comfortable and also allows us to incorporate the amount of storage we need as well as being able to move around the room with ease.

Moodboards

So now we had a wallpaper we’d fallen in love with and the perfect bed. And as these are both the focal points of a bedroom we had the basis for me to work on creating what type of look we wanted.

Mood boards are a great way to experiment with styles, colours, textures before committing your hard earnt cash. They help provide you with focus and ultimately save you time and money in the long run as you’ll have a better understanding of what will work in the room that your redesigning.

They’re pretty much a collection of thoughts gathered up together to provide you with a clearer picture of what you’d like a room to look and feel like.

For us, the wallpaper was going to be the star of the show followed closely be the Wallis bed, so I’ve worked on three different looks to provide us with a sense of visual reference and a much clearer perspective of how we want the room to look and feel. Our bedrooms, after all, are our sanctuary away from the stresses of our busy lives.

I would also like to add that we have restricted space for storage and so had to source wardrobes with a depth of less than 47cm to allow us to move around the bed.

The table lamp in its glass form added a contrasting unexpected texture adding subtle colour to compliment the colour scheme

I also kept the colours muted and soft to create a tranquil feel perfect for a bedroom setting that was also feminine and relaxing.

Decadent Dream

Who doesn’t love a bit a glamour in their lives? This board was all about creating a sense of luxury and a play on visual movement that the leaves of the Va Va Frome wallpaper provide.

Being a tactile person I adore textures and tactile designs such as the latest hot trend of fringing of the Table lamp from Audenza to the delicate goose feather chandelier from Out There Interiors.

Of course, metallics no matter which preference you have instantly up the glam factor too.

As much as I love the natural elements of the previous board, I can’t help but love all the luxurious textures and it feels a little bit Art Deco.

Elegant Serenity

My first thoughts on seeing the Va Va Frome wallpaper was how calming the design made me feel and this mood board sums up that feeling perfectly. Subtle textures and soft colours allow the feature wall and bed to stand proud but also create a serene look that’s more understated than my previous two looks.

On a final note….

I did start to experiment with pattern on pattern which is all the rage at the moment, but I stopped myself. I knew as much as it appeals to others it really wasn’t us. But I did want to point out here that you could experiment with adding more pattern and possibly colour into the equation with this fabulous wallpaper.

Now all we have to do is decide on what look appeals to us the most! I think it’s going to be a tough one. Which one do you like? It’d be lovely to hear your views…

Until next time, thanks for stopping by!

Maria xx

Oure Tranquility did it for me but remember that you need to have lots of storage space so maybe opting for a larger wardrobe? The Heal’s bed is fab but so is the wallpaper you have chosen. It will definitely set the tone for relaxation in this room!

    • Reply Maria October 14, 2018 at 10:34 am

Yes, Pure Tranquility is real contender Jenny! We’ll be assessing our storage and will definitely be accommodating more wardrobes in our bedroom. The floor plan was really to ensure we had room at the base of the bed to move around comfortably and what depth wardrobe would be best to suit the space too! Ideally, we would have moved the bed to the other side of the room but as it’s not our forever home and contemplating moving at some stage, we didn’t want to incur additional electricians costs in what is already turning out to be an expensive makeover lol :D

  • Reply Stacey Sheppard September 30, 2018 at 9:37 pm

Maria, these are all absolutely gorgeous. How on earth will you choose? That bed and wallpaper combo is just divine. I would love to have a bedroom like this and just seeing it has got me wanting to change my own bedroom.

    • Reply Maria October 14, 2018 at 10:30 am

Thanks so much Stacey and to be honest we don’t know which one to go for yet lol as we are both at odds over which one to choose!:D x
