Baa Stool – Handmade Sustainable Sheepskin Designs

The Joan Beauty Stool from Baa Stool made quite a statement to our dressing table back in January when I presented our bedroom makeover. And I have to say, we have been suitably impressed not only by her good looks but by the quality of her ever since. Of course, there is so much more to this fabulous UK independent company and I also wanted to do a more informative post about Baa Stool and the wonders of sheepskin in general in our homes.

About Baa Stool

As you may have guessed from the name, Baa Stool offers you luxury range of British sheepskin furniture, namely stools as well as accessories for your home. Each one lovingly created in Wales.

I’m a strong believer that something good always comes out of something bad and when I read about Michelle the founder of Baa Stool, it certainly rings true. After being made redundant from a job that she had been in for 25 years, Michelle started an Association of Master Upholsterers course and soon found herself setting up her own business. Amazing, don’t you think?

It was during a tea break from a particularly challenging chair that Baa Stool creator Michelle glimpsed the sheep in the fields surrounding her Denbighshire workshop and mused that ‘they looked like little footstools’. The idea took hold and Michelle set to work designing a proto-type Baa Stool.

When tradition meets creativity, the Baa Stool is born.

Michelle’s aim has been to provide quality pieces of furniture that can fit in anywhere but still have the real wow factor. As a result, Baa Stool now has a wide range of unique and contemporary pieces to their collection. All of which compliments all types of homes.

Each stool is handmade, using luxury premium grade sheepskin. Together with a range of styles, there’re a mind-boggling 18 colourways to consider too. From natural shades of ivory, dark brown, mottled creams and browns (including their Rare Breed collection), to a collection of dyed on trend colours; such as Aubergine, Mink and Slate Grey, Teal, Dragon Red, Cornflower Black, Baby Pink, Cerise and Coal Black.

Removable Covers

Personally, one of the things I find appealing from a practical point of view is that each Baa Stool comes with a removable sheepskin cover that makes it easy for cleaning. Particularly, great if you have little ones or as in my case messy adults.

Handcrafted To Perfection

The frames and legs are handcrafted from local sustainably grown hardwood. The legs are either turned to resemble sheep’s hooves or for a more contemporary feel plain and tapered.

I particularly love their bar stool range as kitchen spaces tend to be devoid of tactile textures and are more about wipeable surfaces. Being able to introduce contrasting texture as well as colour (if you want to), means that you can create a cosier feel to your kitchen spaces. Baa Stool even provide replacement covers so you can change the look of the stools as you wish.

Accessories

There’s more to Baa Stool than stools. They’ve introduced an array of accessories too. This heart-shaped cushion would make the perfect Valentines present. Baa Stool have even made sure your beloved dog gets the best bed in town too.

Why Invest In a Baa Stool?

Baa Stool uses only the best quality materials to create their designs. And of course, if you read my post on The Benefits of Choosing Wool For Your Home a while back, you’ll understand why sheepskin is such a favourite when it comes to interiors.

Personally, I love the texture and tactility of sheepskin in the home as it provides a sense of warmth and cosiness to a room. It’s also great at adding a contrasting texture and helps lift a space.

Sustainable Designs

Being a byproduct of the meat industry, sheepskin is repurposed waste that is put to good use.

If you have considered buying manmade sheepskin you might want to consider the fact that it takes up to 3x more energy to make. With our fossil fuels depicted to run out in 50-60 years, it makes sense to go for the real thing.

Perfect For Busy Homes

If like us you have children or should I say adult versions, wool is brilliant at being easy to care for. Even if you don’t and it’s just you, sheepskin is such a practical material.

Wool naturally repels spills, dirt and dust and if you have to pop it in the wash, it typically dries quickly. To make it easier Baa Stool have incorporated removable sheepskin covers allowing you to freshen up your stools as and when they need it.

Each Baa Stool also include a special brush so you can keep them looking their best at all times. To be fair, mine still looks like it’s come out of the box and that’s with constant use by myself and our inherent chair stealer Tabitha the I.E. cat.

It’s also naturally fire retardant which provides you with peace of mind. And if you have anyone who suffers with allergies, sheepskin is also hypo-allergenic.

Durable

Sheepskin is incredibly durable and has a much longer life span when compared to manmade fibres.

Natural sheepskin is also 100% biodegradable so when it does eventually reach its shelf life, you won’t be harming the environment when it comes to disposing of it.

All Round Year Enjoyment!

You might be thinking that sheepskin is just for the cooler winter months. It’s actually a great all year round material for your home. The hollow fibres allow this material to breathe naturally which also helps regulate your body temperature. Sheepskin will help keep you cool in summer and warm in winter.
